The smartphone is a wonderful little device that really can make your life easier if you use it properly. Let’s take a look at some of the best smartphone applications for busy mothers and grandmothers.

The first app up is Cozi. This is a calendar application that lets you organize your shopping, to-do lists and other activities. The tasks can easily be color-coded.

My Fitness Pal can help you keep up with your fitness goals. Taking care of the kids can easily lead to you forgetting about your fitness goals. This app helps track calories and lets you know exactly how many calories you have taken in throughout a day.

Weatherbug is an application that lets you accurately track your local weather forecast. Planning a day out with the kids? This app will let you know if it is going to rain or how hot it will be. If you are already out, then this app can let you know if bad weather is coming your way.

Kindle is an app that will help you to enjoy the little free time that you do have. This application allows you to read ebooks using your smartphone. You can use this application on your computer also.

When out running errands or just sitting at home, smart phones have been proven to be a great toy for both toddlers and babies. Listed below are some of the best apps for your small child.

To help your child learn both colors and fine-motor skills Spot the Dot is the perfect app. Designed by David A. Carter, a renowned children’s author, the goal of this app is to have the child spot a colored dot that hides in plain sight or behind other tiles. This app also has a great replay value because the spot is never in the same spot.Get more information here. http://www.education.com/worksheets/shapes/

Another great app for any small child is SketchMoo2. This app works just as a Magnadoodle, but uses your finger instead of a pen. This is a great app for teaching your child how to learn to draw and is also a great way for you to teach your child as well. What your child can draw is limited by their imagination. In addition to being a great way to draw pictures, you could also have your young toddler practice their writing their letters, numbers and shapes. When your child wants to erase their drawing and create a new one, they just have to swipe the bar across the bottom of the screen.

The world of applications for the smartphone is extensive, varied, and exciting. If one has a need, it can likely be fulfilled with the use of some sort of smartphone app. Whether one loves keeping up to date with sports or knowing the latest fashion sales, there is an app out there for such a need.

Some of the best types of apps for the smartphone are the sports applications. The NBA Basketball app allows fans to keep up with the schedules of all NBA basketball teams, as well as watch games on the smartphone.

The smartphone also has some amazing financial applications. The HomeBudget application allows homeowners to keep track of monthly bills, rent expenses, and grocery expenses. Using this budgeting app can ensure any homeowner sticks to a budget.

The RedLaser app is great for the compulsive shopper who needs to know every sale going on. RedLaser allows a shopper to scan a product in a store and compare the prices of that product with local stores.

For finding local restaurants, Urbanspoon is a free application that provides reviews of local restaurants in a neighborhood. Also, this app will pick a random restaurant for a person if he or she can not decide where to eat!

If you love your apps too much to give them up consider getting a few that will help you earn your pennies back…
Groupon Mobile – This app allows you to download daily coupons and cash in on the crazy discounts Groupon has to offer. Whip out your smartphone at businesses and they can easily scan the coupon.
Gas Apps – Many gas companies have developed apps designed to help you find the cheapest gas in the area. If you’ve got a preferred brand, apps can help you find those dealers, too.
Mint Mobile – The personal finance site Mint has gone mobile and using the app is a great way to manage your finances.

You have to love competition, right? It typically results in great fall-out benefits for those witnessing the competition and waiting to pick up the pieces as two powerhouses battle it out for supremacy and in this case we’re talking about the iPhone and its many apps versus the Windows 7 Phone and its 20,000 developers working on a daily basis to pump out more than 100 new apps every 24 hours. You bet it’s a numbers game for supremacy, but what do consumers care who wins as long as they get to reap the residual benefits of the exponentially-increasing number of apps flooding the market? Sure, some are going to be trite and many may not be suited to areas of personal interest, but you can bet with the sheer numbers being developed that there’s going to be a bushel full that will have some merit when it comes to streamlining (or entertaining) your life. We think 2011 is going to be a great year as the battle continues with great apps like Amazon Kindle, eWallet GO!, ESPN Newsreader, and Tower Bloxx: New York having already been released thus far for the Windows Phone 7. And for those who want to truly be “in the know” it seems that while Windows released apps daily, the biggest day to look for the hottest new apps is on Wednesdays. Stay tuned!

Next time you find yourself sitting bored in an airport, why not consider a board game? Or maybe you can play a board game while passengers are boarding. You get the idea. Following are five of the most popular board games that you’re sure to recognize there’s something to be said for “tried and true.”

Uno is Gamelot’s contribution of the classic game that includes nifty features like wild, reverse, draw 2 and more; plus you can customize your game with nine different rules to play “your way” (that’s not to be confused with making up rules as you go along!).

Scrabble opts in via EA Mobile and provides a great multiplayer experience that lets you start a match from any platform with real-time stats and chats appearing instantly. And get this; to shuffle letters all you have to do is shake your iPhone. How slick is that?

Monopoly is here (did it ever go away?) and includes a 3D view of the board and movers and lets you play solo against the computer or pass-n-play for four. Flicking and dragging of property cards is handled via the touch screen to simulate real-life gaming experiences.

The Game of Life comes in from EA Mobile and translates very nicely from the hugely popular family game to the iPhone with high replayability and animated tokens that really help bring the game to Life (pun intended!). No longer relegated to a flat board, the winding roads and lush landscapes are stunning in their visual appeal.

Trivial Pursuit is the game to have on hand when you find yourself surrounded by experts in every field you know, like entertainment, geography, history, sports & leisure, science & nature, and arts & literature. Perfect to play with up to four players using pass’n play and local Wi-Fi multiplayer and innovative easy-to-use touch controls that allow you to roll the dice with a tilt and a shake.

If nothing else, we have to give credit to the iPhone app creators who have really perfected the art of creating completely useless applications. Contrary to this article’s title, we have legitimate concern that these apps might not just be mindless, but mind-dulling. Either way, if you have absolutely nothing else to do, Apple is making sure there’s always something on your iPhone to play with. But really, you should just make some friends.

Hold On: Arguably the most pointless app in the store, the only purpose of this game is to see how long you can hold your finger on the screen. I can’t even think of a way to describe it in more detail, because that’s actually it.

Tickle Me: This application that mimics the sound of laughter when you imitate the motion of tickling on the screen is not only slightly disturbing but unbelievably useless.

Bubble Wrap: We all love popping the bubbles on those plastic, air-filled packaging sheets, but do we really need an app for that? Most people would argue touching a screen to create this sound is not nearly as rewarding is actually stomping and smashing the real thing. And we definitely don’t suggest stomping on your iPhone, even if you are using the bubble wrap app. The only saving grace of this app is that it actually makes a game out of seeing how many bubbles you can pop in a certain amount of time.

iBeer: The screen fills with an image of what a glass of beer would look like and you can then mimic the motion of drinking from it. You don’t get the refreshing taste, the alcohol buzz, or the drunken entertainment. And you’ll probably end up with your slobber all over your phone. But hey if you’re really trying to cut calories, why not?

Light Saber: This pointless app lets you choose between various sabers and colors and will recreate the noise of the famous StarWars light saber. If you find this app to actually add significant value to your life, then there are much bigger problems.

When you’re getting ready to go back to college this fall, you’re going to be spending a lot of money on stuff for your dorm room, new books, and even some new clothes. But this year we’ve got a few suggestions of what we consider to be must-haves for any college student, and the best part is they won’t cost you a dime. Browse through our top 5 list of best free college apps and make going back to school this fall a little easier.

Evernote: This software program helps students record, store and archive notes. Originally made for use on laptops or PCs, Evernote mobile phone apps let you use all these functions on your smart phone. You can record voice notes, written information and even store photos that can later be viewed from your phone or computer. No need to lug around a heavy laptop to every class.

myHomework: This iPhone app lets you keep track of assignments, papers and upcoming tests for all your classes. At the touch of a finger you can browse all of your assignments for that day, or even the whole month. Additional features let you mark off work that has been completed so you can improve your organization and not worry about forgetting any important assignments.

Bigwords: This handy app is not only free but actually saves you money by helping you find the cheapest textbooks and letting you compare various price offerings.

Rate My Professor: Most students have at least heard of this online professor-rating program, but now it’s even easier to use in its mobile app form. If you’re around campus but not near a computer and thinking about adding a class, first check the professor’s grade distribution and read comments from former students so you don’t get stuck with that old, A-detesting, professor for an entire semester.

College Sports News and Photos: College isn’t all about work, there should always be time for fun and with this Blackberry App you can get all the latest on your team and upcoming opponents. With highlights, game analyses and photos you can maintain that status as 1 fan.

We all know the popular Apple slogan “there’s an app for that,” and probably acknowledge that this is true, considering the thousands of new apps appearing all the time. But, no one wants or needs every program they come up with, but there are a few essential programs that will astound you with how much they improve your quality of life. More than just something that lets you incorporate bizarre emoticons into your text conversations or replicates the obnoxious sound of the World Cup’s vuvuzelas, these are apps that you can use every day to save you time and hassle.Available for a low cost with almost every smart phone, the Zagat to Go app incorporates a GPS system to locate wherever you are and then help you find whatever it is your looking for. If you’re trying to find something to do you can look up nearby restaurants or hotels as well as cost and ratings of each one. In more pressing situations, such as if you’re lost, you can download maps and directions for wherever you need to go. With this app you have access to many of the features of a traditional GPS system but it’s portable and only a fraction of the cost.Everyone needs a rainy day app and WeatherBug fits that role like a glove. This free app will give you live local weather reports, weekly and hourly forecasts and extreme weather alerts. If you’re heading out of town, check the weather so you know how to pack. Looks like rain? Pull up your WeatherBug app and see if you’re really going to need that umbrella.Besides the fact that it’s extremely dangerous, recent laws are declaring texting while driving to be illegal. With Vlingo, you can dictate your texts or emails without ever having to punch a key. You can even have received messages read aloud to you. And this convenient, safety-focused app doesn’t cost you a penny.

Hopefully you’ve taken our advice on some of the more useful apps, but that doesn’t mean every app you download needs to be educational or practical. There are thousands of entertainment apps that may not save you time or help you organize your life, but who cares they’re fun! If you’re bored or just looking for something to do while you’re sitting around with friends, you might enjoy one of these apps.

Lie Detector Scan: Don’t go demanding your roommate–whom you suspect of stealing your ramen noodles–submit to this lie detector test; it’s meant to be fun. But, it is good for a little entertainment if you’re not doing much else.
